HMAS DIAMANTINA:
Australia's Last River Class Frigate, 1945-1980

Peter Nunan

Diamantina is Australia's largest World War II survivor and the last of over 200 River class and variant frigates the Allies built during that conflict.

Built in Queensland, HMAS Diamantina went to war at Bougainville in 1945, then was the venue for the Japanese surrenders at Nauru and Ocean Island.

In two commissions between 1945 and 1980, Diamantina gave outstanding service to the nation - in war, in making the peace, during the Cold War, and in oceanographic research; in conjunction with bodies like CSIRO, she carried out oceanographic research in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and also trained thousands of Navy recruits.
Decommissioned in 1980, HMAS Diamantina is now a major attraction at Queensland's Maritime Museum located on the Brisbane River.

The 160 page book was written by Peter Nunan of the Queensland Maritime Museum, and is well illustrated with photos of the ship's two commissions.

A STOKER'S JOURNEY:
From the Med to Korea in HMASs Waterhen, Nizam, Warramunga & Sydney.

Andy Nation

A STOKER'S JOURNEY is a record of his 12 years in the Royal Australian Navy, from 1940-52; his fears of attack by German dive bombers or submarines, and then being sunk in the Mediterannean is graphically described.

From the Mediterannean Andy went to New Guinea, and a few years later sailed to the Korean War on the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney.

The book provides a wonderful insight into how a young sailor viewed the war, his anxieties and hopes at a time when hope was in small supply.

The 212 page paperback book is illustrated with maps and many photos from the author's personal collection.
